Supervision of doctoral students and researchers overview

Supervised to successful PhD over 20 candidates. Two of these PhD student were awarded very prestigious awards:

• Eduardo Almeida Soares, Explainable-by-design Deep Learning, 100% supervision, March 2022, funded by Ford, now Senior Research Scientist with IBM; awarded 2023 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award

• Xiaowei Gu, 2018, Self-Organising Transparent Learning Systems, 100% supervision, now Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at University of Surrey; awarded 2020 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award The award was presented at the World Congress on Computational Intelligence WCCI-2020 and the list of awardees started with Yoshua Bengio and ended with Xiaowei Gu.

 

Currently supervising the following PhD students:

• Alvaro Lopez Pellicer, Trustworthy Autonomous Systems, funded by EPSRC (TAS-S project), 2022-2025 

• Agil Aghasanli, Interpretable Deep Learning, 2024-2027

• Ben Tomczyk, full time, 100% supervision, Explainable Deep Learning, 2023-2027

• Ham Mahatubgris, full time, 100% supervision, Explainable AI for Earth Observation, 2026-2029

• Jasleen, 20% supervision, Data-Driven Hybrid Motion–Force Control for Robust Human–Manipulator Interaction, 2026-2029

• tba, 20% supervision, Interdisciplinary Safe Shared Autonomy for Ageing Care with Humanoid Robot (G1-CARE), 2026-2029​

 

Supervised over 30 PostDoctoral Research Associates (PDRAs). Currently supervising Dr Yi Li on ELSA project. ​

Line management of project administrators:

• Nikki Flook - project manager on ELSA project, January 2023 - 31 September 2025

• LIRA project administrator - Megan Dugdale (during 2022 - Jake English; prior to that, 2019-2021 - Megan Dent) - till Jan. 2026

 

Hosted a dozen visiting fee paying PhD students and Professors (appointed at Lancaster as visiting researchers and/or Professors)
